Honoring Mama
The thumbnail for this blog post says a lot! Mother’s Day can be anywhere from joyful, to a mixed bag, to deeply triggering for folks for a whole lot of different reasons. There are mothers who have lost children of all ages and children of all ages who have lost mothers. There are mothers and children separated due to illness, addiction, strained relationships, incarceration and even this pandemic. The holiday can be a lot. But, I see you. I weep with they who weep and rejoice with they who rejoice.
Historically speaking this day that was originally set aside in the late 1800’s as a national day of action to ensure that women’s voices were heard politically, but was later institutionalized in the early 1900’s as a day to honor and remember the sacrificial labor of motherhood. Although capitalism has co-opted our observance to the tune of $25 Billion spent on cards, flowers, gifts and such spent for Mother’s Day annually, there’s something that’s still sacred about this day.
